The dust has barely settled from Sam Schmidt Motorsports’ 2012 championship winning season in Firestone Indy Lights, but this week the team will set its sights on the 2013 season and test four drivers at the Chris Griffis Mazda Road to Indy Open Test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The test is named in honor of Chris Griffis, who served as team manager for SSM’s Indy lights program and led the team to 46 Firestone Indy Lights race wins and four series titles before his passing in 2011.
“Given the name of the test, we’re honored to participate,” said Sam Schmidt, owner of SSM.
SSM will test Nick McBride, Jorge Goncalves, Luis Michael Dorrbecker and Gabby Chaves over the course of the two-day test that will include all rungs of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system.
“I think it will be a great test having incorporated the entire ladder in one place,” Schmidt said. “Having a defined path to the IZOD IndyCar Series is critical.”
Schmidt has shown unparalleled commitment to the Firestone Indy Lights Series, and the team has racked up six series championships since 2004.
“We have a lot of trophies in the trophy case but I think our real contribution is the number of drivers who have advanced to the next level through our program,” Schmidt said. “I really enjoy working with the young drivers and helping them through this important stage of their careers.”
Firestone Indy Lights drivers will be on track Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 4 – 5:15 p.m. The test is open to the public.
