TORONTO (July 6, 2012) – On a sweltering day in Toronto, Sam Schmidt Motorsports made things just a little hotter during the first day of practice for the Honda Indy Toronto weekend.
Throughout the day, all of Sam Schmidt Motorsports’ five drivers kept their names near the top of speed charts in both the IZOD IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights.
In practice for the IZOD IndyCar Series race, the No. 77 Schmidt Hamilton HP Dallara/Honda/Firestone car driven by rookie Simon Pagenaud finished the day second on the time sheet. His lap of 1:00.3904 seconds at 104.619 mph was only slower than Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti, who produced a lap of 1:00.2786 seconds at 104.813 mph.
Tristan Vautier topped the Firestone Indy Lights’ timing chart in Friday’s practice with a lap of 1:04.7297 seconds at 97.606 mph to lead the four-car SSM Indy Lights team. Points leader Esteban Guerrieri was fourth with a lap of 1:05.0941 seconds at 97.059 mph.
SSM’s Oliver Webb finished Indy Lights practice with a lap of 1:05.1199 seconds at 97.021 mph for fifth while Victor Carbone ended the day with a lap of 1:05.4921 seconds at 96.470 mph, which placed him eighth.
IZOD IndyCar Series qualifying is Saturday, July 7 at 1 p.m. The 85-lap Honda Indy Toronto race is Sunday at 1 p.m.
Qualifying for Firestone Indy Lights is Saturday, July 7 at 8:45 a.m. The race is later Saturday at 4 p.m.
