The British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) has celebrated Martin Plowman’s excellence in the field of motorsport by pronouncing him a Full Member of the esteemed organization. The BRDC, founded in 1928, is the most exclusive club in motor racing with only 850 members comprised of the most successful racing drivers from Great Britain and the Commonwealth.
Membership of the BRDC is highly sought after and extremely difficult to achieve. Those who have met the exacting entry criteria have achieved at the highest levels of the sport, or made a significant contribution to enable others to do so. The list of Members, past and present, reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of motor sport and the Club’s current President is Damon Hill OBE, Formula 1 World Champion, 1996.
It was Plowman’s success in the Firestone Indy Lights series that earned him top honors. Previously a BRDC Rising Star – a junior member considered the future of motorsport – his top finishes at Mid-Ohio, Iowa, and Edmonton along with an overall 3rd place finish in the Firestone Indy Lights Championship helped him fulfill the requirements of becoming a Full Member. His application was also firmly supported by the high recommendations of current members. His dedication to the sport, strong on-track performance, and off-track charity work set him apart.
Secretary of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, Stuart Pringle, commented: “Martin was spotted as a real talent by the BRDC sometime ago and was one of the very few drivers ever to join the BRDC ‘Rising Stars’ programme whilst still in karting. I am therefore delighted that he has qualified to become a Full Member of the Club and he joins the likes of Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon flying the flag in North America. Martin’s membership comes just as he is poised to break in to the Indy Car Series and we could not ask for another stronger ambassador for British motor sport in the USA and the internationally important ICS.”
“It’s a tremendous honor to be selected as a full member of the BRDC,” said Plowman. “I look forward to proudly wearing the BRDC emblem in America throughout my career.”
The BRDC owns and operates Silverstone Circuit on the Buckinghamshire/Northamptonshire borders. The Club has been responsible for developing Silverstone into a world class motor sport venue and promoting top flight motor sport there for approaching 60 years.
The Club takes it responsibility as “guardians of British motor sport” very seriously. In addition to maintaining and operating the only circuit currently licensed to run a Grand Prix in Great Britain, the BRDC has for many years fostered young driver talent. That these factors have contributed to Great Britain retaining its high profile and achieving considerable success within motor sport over many years, is a source of great pride to the Club and its Members.
