Sam Schmidt Motorsports’ Alex Tagliani will start Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series’ Edmonton Indy on the inside of the ninth row after qualifying 17th today at Edmonton City Centre Airport in Alberta, Canada.

Driving the No. 77 Bowers &Wilkins Dallara/Honda/Firestone car, Tagliani recorded a time of 1.19.1329 seconds at 101.177 mph on the 2.256-mile, 13-turn street course.

“It’s very disappointing to tell you the truth,” Tagliani said after climbing from his car in his pit box. “We don’t have a very good set-up for the Firestone red tires. We just missed it, and it’s a bummer. We were so fast in practice, finishing in P6, and then not being able to improve on our practice speed in qualifying. It’s quite disappointing.”

This will be Tagliani’s sixth start in the Edmonton Indy. His best finish is seventh in 2005.

Takuma Sato won the PEAK Performance Pole Award after turning a lap of 1.18:5165 at 101.971 mph in Firestone Fast Six qualifying. It is Sato’s second PEAK pole of 2011. He also won the pole at Iowa Speedway in June, which was the first of his Indy car career.

Penske Racing’s Will Power, who had earned the previous five street-road course poles of the season and had started from the pole in three of the four previous years here, will join Sato on the front row. He had a best lap of 1:18.5674 at 101.905 mph.

Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon (1:18.6442 at 101.805 mph), the 2010 race winner, and Dario Franchitti (1:18.6628 at 101.781 mph) will share the second row. KV Racing’s E.J. Viso, making his first appearance in the Firestone Fast Six this year, rounds out the top five in qualifying with his lap of 1:18.7383 at 101.684 mph. The top five were separated by two-tenths of a second.

Sunday’s Edmonton Indy will air live on Versus at 2 p.m. ET.
